What is Medicare?

Medicare is the federal health insurance for US citizens and legal residents who are 65 or older. You may be eligible to get Medicare earlier if you have a disability, End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), or ALS (also called Lou Gehrig’s disease).

Some people get Medicare automatically, others have to actively sign up – it depends if you start getting retirement or disability benefits from Social Security before you turn 65.

What is the Medicare enrollment period?

The Medicare Enrollment Period is a seven-month period that begins three months before the month of your 65th birthday and ends three months after the month of your birthday. So, if you were born in April, your enrollment period is January – July.

    Frequently Asked Questions About Medicare

    1. How do I sign up for Medicare when I turn 65 in Texas?

If you’re already receiving Social Security benefits, you’ll be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B automatically. If not, you’ll need to apply online at SSA.gov, over the phone, or in person at your local Social Security office. Our licensed insurance agents in Texas can walk you through the process, explain your options, and make sure you enroll on time.

    2. What is the difference between Original Medicare and a Medicare Advantage plan?

Original Medicare includes Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) coverage, but does not include prescription drug coverage or most dental, vision, or hearing benefits. Medicare Advantage (Part C) combines Part A and Part B into one plan offered by a private insurance company and often includes prescription drug coverage plus extra benefits. We can help compare plans side-by-side so you can choose the one that works best for your needs.

    3. Can I get help with Medicare in Spanish in Houston?

Yes. Vega Insurance Brokers offers Medicare consultations in both English and Spanish. Our bilingual agents make sure you understand your options, enrollment periods, and benefits in the language you prefer.

    4. What happens if I miss my Medicare Initial Enrollment Period?

If you miss your 7-month Initial Enrollment Period around your 65th birthday, you may have to wait until the General Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31) and could face late enrollment penalties. Some special circumstances qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period, such as losing employer coverage. We can help you see if you qualify.

    5. How do Medicare Part D prescription drug plans work?

Part D plans are offered by private insurers and help cover the cost of prescription medications. Plans vary in terms of monthly premiums, formularies (drug lists), and preferred pharmacies. Our team will review your prescriptions and help you find a plan that covers your medications at the lowest cost.

    6. Can I change my Medicare plan every year?

Yes. During the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7), you can switch Medicare Advantage or Part D prescription drug plans. There’s also a Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31) for certain changes. We’ll help you evaluate your plan each year to ensure it still meets your needs.

    7. Do Medicare Advantage plans cover dental, vision, and hearing in Texas?

Many Medicare Advantage plans include benefits for dental check-ups, eye exams, eyeglasses, hearing tests, and hearing aids, as well as other extras like fitness programs and over-the-counter allowances. We’ll show you which plans in your area include these benefits.

    8. How much does it cost to meet with a Medicare insurance agent?

All consultations with Vega Insurance Brokers are completely free. We’re paid by the insurance companies if you choose to enroll in a plan, so you’ll never pay us directly for our services.
